Third Party Fire and Theft Car Insurance

Get great mid-range cover for your ride

If your car or motorbike has clocked up a few kilometres in its time, then CGU Third Party Fire & Theft is a great mid-range insurance option for you. The best news? You can tailor the insurance to suit your budget and the way you drive.

  • Emergency or temporary repairs

    If your car needs emergency or temporary repairs so that it can be driven or used, we will cover the cost of repairs, up to $800 (inclusive of GST) per incident.

  • Towing and transport of your vehicle

    If your car is damaged in an accident and cannot be driven or used, we will tow it from the scene to a place of safety, the nearest repairer, or any other place we agree to.

  • Removal of debris and demolishing costs

    Paid in addition to the sum insured (Up to 10% of sum insured)

  • Re-coding of locks and barrels after theft of keys

    If the keys of your car are stolen, we will cover the cost to repair and re-code your locks and barrels, up to $1,000 (inclusive of GST).

  • Storage costs of your car

    If your vehicle is put into storage while we settle your claim, we will cover the reasonable storage costs.

  • Is a learner driver covered on my car insurance?

    Yes, they are!

    So even when the L plates are on, your car insurance counts.

    If you’ve chosen the Nominated Driver policy under your CGU Third Party Fire & Theft cover, the learner driver must be accompanied by one of the nominated drivers on your policy.

  • What is third party fire & theft car insurance?

    Let’s break down the name ‘third party fire & theft’ to show you exactly what you’re covered for if you take out this insurance:

    • Third party – this is cover for any damage or loss that your car or motorcycle causes to another person’s vehicle or property (some exclusions, like driving under the influence, apply)
    • Fire – this is cover for your car if it’s a write-off or damaged as a result of fire
    • Theft – this is cover for your car if it’s stolen or damaged in an attempted theft. Your keys are covered, too.

    CGU Third Party Fire & Theft car insurance comes with some added benefits that give you greater peace of mind. These include:

    • Uninsured motorist damage – if your car is damaged in a collision and it’s not your fault, yet the other driver doesn’t have insurance, we’ll cover the cost to repair your car (up to $5,000)
    • Hire car after theft – if your car has been stolen, or isn’t drivable after a bungled theft, we’ll look after the cost of a hire car for up to 21 days

  • How much does third party fire & theft car insurance cost?

    The cost of your third party fire & theft insurance policy depends on a range of factors, including your age, location, your vehicle’s make and model, and whether you keep your car in a garage or not.

    You can lower the cost of your insurance by nominating two drivers to be covered on your policy.

  • Is my car covered when someone else drives?

    This depends on the type of third party fire & theft car insurance policy you’ve chosen (there are two to choose from).

    With our standard Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, your car is covered no matter who’s behind the wheel (note: some exclusions apply).

    With our Nominated Driver policy, drivers under 25 years of age aren’t covered (except for learner drivers accompanied by a fully licensed driver aged 25 years or more). Anyone that’s not listed on your policy will incur a higher excess in the event of a claim, too.

    It’s a good idea to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before letting someone else drive your car.

Understanding your third party fire and theft car insurance quote

Let’s face it. Younger drivers have less experience and can be more likely to have accidents. So if you’re under 25 years of age, you’ll pay a little more.

Your vehicle

In calculating your premium, we look at the make and model of your car, and how much it would cost to repair or replace it.

Your location

Some suburbs have higher rates of accident or theft than others, which is why we’ll ask you where you usually park your car.

Garage or street?

If you keep your car in a garage overnight, it’s much less likely to be damaged or stolen than one parked on a street.

Your driving history

Got a clean slate? We’ll lower your premium if you haven’t made any claims in the past.
