Setting the benchmark for risk management

More than 100 motor fleet and property professionals and their brokers attended the 20th annual Benchmark Awards hosted by Lumley Insurance. 

The awards, held at the Fox Car Museum in Melbourne, were an opportunity to recognise the leaders in risk management solutions for fleet and commercial property.

Bev Brock spoke at the awards about the importance of road safety, sharing her personal story and passion for making our roads safe.

This year’s Benchmark Award winners were:

Commercial Motor ­– Transfield Services (broker Marsh)

Transfield Services operate a fleet of over 3,000 vehicles in Australia and has implemented many highly successful risk management initiatives including:

  • All drivers complete a mandatory online driver training course.
  • Implementation of an Integrated Vehicle Management System (IVMS) in all vehicles within Australia and New Zealand.
  • Increased awareness at all operational levels of incident trends and exposures.
  • Monthly message from the CEO to raise awareness on driver safety in company vehicles.

Corporate Solutions Property Risk Management – Green’s Foods Holdings (broker Aon).

Green’s Foods Holdings prides itself on thoroughly reviewing hazards and working with Lumley to eliminate or control them. This is demonstrated by an outstanding track record in the successful implementation of the following risk management initiatives:

  • Continued focus and refinement of fixed protection and suppression systems.
  • Installation of explosion relief venting for flour silos as well as the adoption of hazardous area classification philosophy involving associated electrical systems.
  • Continued removal of combustible EPS panels in line with site upgrades.
  • Stringent controls involving production ovens in terms of process monitoring, control, calibration and housekeeping in general.
  • A well established business continuity plan for the group which is updated annually

Corporate Solutions Property Site Engagement – Thomas Foods International, Murray Bridge (broker Willis)

Thomas Foods International has been in the meat processing industry for over 30 years supplying its products throughout Australia and to approximately 80 countries worldwide. They are a well respected food producer and are Australia’s largest family-owned mutton lamb and goat processing company. 

The Murray Bridge site has been operational since the 1950’s and has undertaken a number of initiatives to foster risk management as an integral part of its operations. These include:

  • Major electrical wiring upgrades, removal of old services and the elimination of related hazards.
  • Removal of extensive amounts of combustible EPS Panels within core operational areas and replacing them with industry approved panels.
  • Upgrade of major plant refrigeration systems and replacement of steam boilers.
  • Installation of a fixed sprinkler protection to high hazard storage areas

Longest Serving Motor Fleet Client – BORAL

This year we also recognised Lumley’s longest serving motor fleet client – BORAL. With a fleet of more than 4,830 vehicles on the road at any one time, ranging from regular sedans to big tankers, this company continues to take Risk Management seriously with a “zero harm” goal.

They are a previous Benchmark Award winner and have been a longstanding client of Lumley for the past 69 years.

The Lumley Insurance Benchmark Awards were launched in 1994 as a forum to discuss and recognise fleet risk management best practices. In 2012, the scope of the awards was expanded to include Corporate Solutions Property risks. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.
