How to optimise your search engine results

Recently we ran an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) 101 webinar. In the webinar we went through what you need to be doing to get your website found and acquire new clients.
Obtaining a great search engine ranking takes work and persistence. However a good place to start is setting goals at a local geographic level (i.e. Public Liability Geelong). Here are a few ideas to help you quickly improve your local SEO rankings.
  1. Be ready for anything: Be aware that SEO is never a onetime affair. It takes continuous time and effort to see results. Have a checklist of what you want to accomplish and work down the list.
  2. Get noticed: One of the best ways to get started with local SEO is by getting listed in directories. There are multiple sites that make listing your website fast and easy. The popular ones are Bing, Google+, Yahoo Local and many more. A good way to get known in your locality is by listing your business in sites, forums and local listings that caters to your specific location and business category.
  3. Make it your business to be on social sites: Social media is extremely important for the health of your business. It is not just a great way to socialise and meet with friends and acquaintances. For your business, it is a great way to get your foot in the door with people who may be interested in what you are selling. Contribute meaningfully and in a way that gets people drawn to your business.
  4. Blog like your business’ life depends on it:  Regularly update your site with latest industry news and information relevant to your business. Provide useful information and be there to answer questions in the comment section. The aim is to make your blog the 'go to' place for information and ideas. Become the expert and reliable source of information and people will be eating out of your hands.
  5. Don't do it all, outsource: If you don't have the time, skills or patience to write blog posts, there's nothing stopping you from bringing in professional help. A freelance web designer and writer will add the missing sparkle to your content and make a whole world of difference.
  6. User experience matters: From Google's stand point, user experience is king. If you want your website to do well in the search engines, you need to put yourself in the shoes of users. Are they going to find your content useful? Is your website easy to navigate? Can they find all the information they need without hitting their heads on the wall? Google Analytics is a sure way to find the obstacles in your site and do something about it. 
  7. Ensure its mobile friendly: Lastly, make your website is multi-platform compatible. Google recently implemented a change to their algorithm that punishes websites that are not mobile-friendly. You can check if Google thinks your website is mobile-friendly by searching for it on your mobile device.
