Lisa Carter, Managing Director of Clear Insurance & 2019 NIBA Broker of the Year

What do you like about working in insurance?

I truly enjoy nurturing relationships with clients and insurers alike. I love the complexity of insurance, the problem solving and negotiations that go along with pulling together a complex program for a client. I love a good challenge!

Why is International Women’s day important to you?

Put simply, as a mother of three daughters, I want them to have every opportunity available to them over the course of their lives so they can pursue their passions

What drives your ambition?

Insatiable curiosity - I have a thirst for knowledge! I encourage my daughters and staff to always strive to be the best they can possibly be. I truly believe we can drive positive change in the world.

What’s the biggest thing influencing the insurance industry right now?

The continuing hardening of the market, continued rise in catastrophe events, increased litigation and class action claims, reduced capacity & insurer underwriting appetites, continued low interest rates and poor investment returns for insurers, market consolidation (Insurers & Brokers), regulatory and compliance pressures for insurers and brokers…. just to name a few!  Whilst a hard market makes placing business more challenging it is also a great opportunity for my team to focus on what we enjoy doing most: delivering quality risk and insurance advice to our clients.

What are 3 things you love to do outside of work?

Spending time with my three daughters, playing/coaching hockey and going to gigs/festivals - I absolutely love live music. So much so that my daughters are all named after bands and music!

Where would you be if you didn’t work in insurance?

As a child my dream was to be a veterinarian but I was devastated to find out I have severe allergies to cats and horses, so that career path was quickly ruled out. Whilst in high school I was aiming to study Law, instead found my way to the wonderful world of insurance and haven’t looked back since.
