Who is CGU's latest rap star? Gary. And he's a bricklayer!

03 December 2009

In August 2009, the national ‘Give Yourself A Rap’ competition was launched due to the overwhelming feedback from the public following the CGU ‘Bill the alpaca farmer’ and ‘Susan the providore’ rap commercials airing between March and June 2009. So well received were they, that creative raps were sent in from creative nurses, electricians and business owners. So we decided to extend a formal invite to people to write, produce and star in their own rap to capitalise on the commercials’ popularity and drive home the message to current and potential customers that ‘whoever you are or whatever you do, CGU’s got a policy for you’. The winning entry was entitled to $20,000 plus we agreed to reproduce the rap professionally and include it in our 2010 campaign.

Over 170 highly entertaining entries were received with 58,000 visits to the dedicated website (32,000 of these being unique visitors) and over 4,000 people downloading the catchy music from the CGU site.
The well deserving winner was loveable larrikin Gary the Bricklayer. A $20,000 cheque was presented for his efforts on Channel 9’s final Footy Show for the year and you can look forward to enjoying his witty and amusing advertisement on your television screen come mid-March 2010.
